Jeff Wilpon Cracking Jokes About How The Mets Suck During His Pre-Game Blow Job To Mariano Rivera
NYDN – Jeff Wilpon showed up at Citi Field Tuesday night, made a rare public appearance and promptly gave up on the season during a pregame ceremony for Rivera, who threw out the first ball, and eventually the last. “Wish we could see you in the World Series,” Jeff Wilpon told Rivera. “But I’m not sure that’s going to happen.” Rivera, a reliever by nature, tried to rescue Wilpon from his own verbal slip. “You never know,” Rivera said, and Wilpon agreed. It was too late for a save, though. Wilpon, the Met COO, had committed the terrible crime of being too honest about his team’s hopeless lot in life. It’s one thing for fans, columnists and talk-show hosts to say that. It’s quite another for the owner to wave the white flag, when he is charging spectators more than a hundred dollars for some of the better sightlines in the ballpark. Again, he is right. Again, he shouldn’t have said it. This is what he should have told Rivera: “Mariano, we hope to see you in the World Series. We have some work to do, but we’re not giving up.”
Ya gotta believe! Unless of course you actually own the team. Then you should openly give up.
Obviously nobody in their right mind disagrees with Jeff Wilpon. And Mets fans are some of the most negative people on the planet earth. I make t shirts about canceling the season before the first pitch of the season. But me and the rest of hopeless Mets fans aren’t the fucking owners. We’re not the people responsible for trying to build a winning product and turning this whole thing around. There are two main problems with a loser like Jeff Wilpon: 1) He’s not an inherent baseball guy. He’s a businessman, and a terrible one at that, who inherited this franchise from his father. He doesn’t have that desire to win like a George Steinbrenner did. He didn’t build this franchise himself, so he doesn’t have that fire to see it succeed. Just has the desire to be financially sound and in the process ends up worrying about all the wrong things when it comes to the Mets. Which leads to…
2) He can’t get out of his own fucking way. What Jeff Wilpon should be worried about is putting a winning product on the field. Instead what he worries about is paying homage to Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers. Honoring Chipper Jones. Praising Mariano Rivera. Going above and beyond and having him throw the first pitch and hold a press conference and declare the season over. None of that shit needs to be done. Not while you’re churning out 70 win seasons. All it does is present more opportunities to fuck up, say something stupid, and alienate your fans. Like if Wilpon doesn’t have this ball washing tribute for Mariano in mind, he doesn’t call this presser, and doesn’t even have the opportunity to say something stupid like this. When you’re literally one of the worst owners in sports, you should probably stop going out of your way to honor other teams and players while putting your team down. Plain and simple. I don’t care if other teams do it. I don’t care if his comments are correct. Thats not the right way to handle a franchise.
